Fabulous New Restaurant!

During the pandemic last summer, we heard through the local paper that a new restaurant was coming to downtown Fort Worth…the Trinity College Irish Pub!  When the website went up, I immediately salivated over the menu, because it had all my tried and true favorite British foods that I grew up with at home.  I’m originally from England, and so was my mom, so she made a lot of British foods when I lived at home.  We had a nice little British restaurant in Virginia for a while, but I haven’t found one close by in the nearly 4 years we’ve lived in Texas.  At least a couple times of year, I scour Google to see if any new British spots have opened up.  The only one I’d been to up to this point was The Londoner, but it’s all the way out in Colleyville, which is quite a distance from home and not someplace I’d stop unless I was already out that far from home (which isn’t often).

Because of the pandemic, though, we hadn’t actually tried the new pub yet since it opened…until now!  We missed our date night this week, so we decided to go to the antique mall to look around and peek in the record shop inside.  No luck there, so we went on to the actual Doc’s Records and Vintage store downtown.  I only came out with one 78 rpm treasure for my Victrola (Bing Crosby), so I decided to surprise Steve by stopping at the nearby Steel City Pops to grab a refreshing gourmet popsicle to enjoy on our hot ride home.  It’s located in a busy foot traffic yuppy district, so we had to park and walk several blocks to get to it.  Sadly, we finally arrived, only to find that they were closed today, despite having posted hours!  Big disappointment.  But on the way, we passed that new Irish pub!  I wasn’t sure exactly where it was located until we literally walked right by it.  Since Steel City Pops hadn’t worked out and we’d walked so far to get to it, we decided to go on in and enjoy a late lunch/early dinner!

We sat right by the door away from everyone else, and the door was open to the sidewalk, providing a steady breeze and good ventilation, which made us more comfortable about dining out (we haven’t really done that since the pandemic started).  We ordered a platter of fish and chips (cod…yum!), an appetizer of Scottish eggs, and bread pudding for dessert.  The fish was enormous!  Like a fillet of the whole fish…so thick and moist that I’d actually describe it as juicy, with a perfect, crispy batter that wasn’t greasy at all.  It was so huge that we cut it in half and still felt like we each had a large portion.  It had fries and a little cup and super fresh coleslaw, as well.  So very good!  And there was a big bottle of malt vinegar right on the table…perfect!

The Scottish eggs were wonderful…soft-boiled wrapped in yummy sausage and breading on a bed of like a country gravy.  I asked if they had Coleman’s mustard, which is how I’m used to enjoying Scottish eggs, but they didn’t.  Next time, I’ll skip the gravy and take my own little container of hot Coleman’s mustard for dipping!  The gravy was good, though…tasted like it had capers in it.  It had little dabs of a spicy jalapeno sauce around the edge of the plate to spice it up.  It was all very good.

Last, we got the generous portion of bread pudding, which was clearly made fresh in the restaurant.  It was a giant square piece with a lovely crust, freshly baked and sitting in a pool of custard and drizzled with caramel sauce.  The aroma of it filled my sense of smell as soon as the server set it on the table!  The cinnamon, the raisins…all of it just right.  The custard was wonderful.  It’s the first restaurant I’ve ever found that served bread pudding properly.  It was baked well and evenly, not wet or soggy, and all the flavors came through the consistent texture.  It was just wonderful!  It was more than enough to share.  Steve said it was so filling that he had to give it up, and I gladly polished off every bite!  Such a treat.  All I needed was a cup of hot tea.  It wasn’t on the menu, but I asked the server for next time, and she said they do indeed have hot tea.  *Perfect!*  And I love a good, strong Irish breakfast tea…it’s even stronger than a strong British blend black tea.

There were so many wonderful dishes on the menu to choose from…shepherd’s pie, bangers and mash, turkey Reuben, corned beef and cabbage…I’m sure it’s all just as good as this was!  I can’t wait to try it all!  The whole experience was beyond my expectations, and we officially have a new favorite date night restaurant!  I”m tickled pink!  Obviously, I highly recommend it for any locals.

Sadly, we ate everything so fast that I didn’t get a single photo of the food or of us enjoying our afternoon together!  But rest assured, you won’t be disappointed in the menu, and we’ll show you our happy faces another time. Smile

An Unwanted Visitor

We had several straight days of heavy rain this week, which kept me from tending to the pool maintenance when I usually would do it on Thursday.  By Friday afternoon, it was still raining, but not as heavily, so I figured I was just gonna have to bite the bullet and go out to do whatever I could to start recovering the pool while the rain was at least a little lighter.

If the pool didn’t overflow the night before, then I know it must have gotten close.  The water level was already pretty elevated when I went to bed Thursday night, and I was awakened in the night to the thunder and torrential downpour.  As a result, tons of tree debris had washed off the roof of the house and fallen into the pool.  I started out by skimming the top of the pool to get out some of the tree droppings.  There was already plenty of it that had sunken to the floor of the pool, so we’d have to do a good vacuuming once the weekend came around.  But for now, skimming was the best I could do.  Then I went to empty the return baskets and the pump basket.  The pressure in the filter was pretty high, so I figured my husband would also have to backwash when he got home.

As soon as I took the cap off the first return basket, I stepped back and gasped!  All I could see was that there was some sort of dead, hairy animal floating in the top of the basket!  GROSS!  It looked bigger than it actually was, but all I could see was brown hair and a part that revealed skin underneath.  There was a live June-bug crawling around on the carcass.  Ugh!

I did not want to touch the basket with my hand in case whatever it was wasn’t completely dead yet, so I grabbed a hand trowel nearby and slid it through the lip of the basket to pull it straight up and out.  As the water drained to the bottom, I could see that the unknown critter was clearly…a RAT!!!!!!

Rat from Pool Return Basket

I merely put the basket up high where my dogs wouldn’t mess with it and left it for my husband to dispose of when he got home.  He simply dumped the basket into a ziploc bag so he could put it in the trash.  Nasty!!!  Look at that ugly, disgusting tail!  So gross…I could hardly look at it.

I’m assuming it accidentally made its way into the pool in the blinding rain and couldn’t get back out, so it drowned and got sucked into the return basket.  We know a colony of rats lives in the retaining wall between our backyard property line and the neighbor’s elevated driveway.  Technically, they live underneath his driveway and come out into our yard through the bricks in the retaining wall.  So awful, and there isn’t a thing we can do about it!  We knew there was an issue when we moved here, because the previous owners had left tons of black bait boxes in the bushes by the fence.  We’ve seen them running along the fence and around the pool equipment by the fence on our security cameras at night, and they’ve even stolen stuff from my garden between our driveways (yuck!).  We’ve tried putting bait out, but there’s just no way to get rid of them all.  Our dogs sometimes tag team in keeping them away from the house and pool equipment, thank goodness.

Anyway, that rat was definitely an unwanted visitor and was probably the most exciting thing that happened to me this week!  I could do without ever finding one again.  I think it was worse than the year I found a snake coiled up in the other pool return basket.  I just never know what I’ll find when I reach my hand in there!  LOL

Homeschool Plan for 2021-2022 School Year–8th Grade

Every year, I share what my homeschool curriculum plans are for the upcoming school year.  This is the last time I’ll ever do this, because this new school year will be our LAST year of homeschooling, and then I officially retire after 19 years!

I’m still considering what to do for math.  I switched programs when my older kids got to Algebra.  They both did No-Nonsense Algebra, and it really helped them cope with the abstract thinking required for algebra, while presenting the material in concise, interesting videos and 1-page practice pages.  But Holden has really enjoyed CTC Math over the last couple of years, so I’m undecided yet as to whether or not we should just stick with what works for him or if we should switch like the older kids did to No-Nonsense Algebra.  I still have a few weeks to decide!

Another complication in my plan this year is that mid-year, Spelling City Premium sold out to Vocabulary A-Z.  My paid subscription transferred over automatically, and all of my word lists and student info were imported.  However, that site is terribly cumbersome, not easy to use, not organized very well, and not flexible in the way that Spelling City was.  I found out we can go back to using the free version of Spelling City for spelling words only, but the vocabulary portion was a premium feature, and that’s no longer available at Spelling City. So now I’m at odds about what to do for vocabulary this year.  I think I may need to seek out something entirely new.  UPDATE:  I found a site called SpellingClassroom.com that I plan to use for both spelling and vocabulary.  It’s $50/yr for one student, and I can add my customized lists.  Kids play spelling and vocabulary games, take quizzes and tests, it records their activities and scores, and they also earn reward “coins” they can spend to play real video games.  There are lots of parental controls, and we tried it out with a 2-week free trial.  Holden loved the games and activities, and setting up my word lists was easy.  This one is a winner!

I’m really glad I sat down to put this table together, because I realized I still have some iffy decisions to make.  I do have my Homeschool Planet lesson plans already saved for Bookshark history, readers, and spelling.  I just need to make the other lesson plans and order the supply kit for science.  I did already set up my school year schedule in Homeschool Planet, also.  I guess I’d better hurry up with these final decisions, though…we only have 5 weeks of school left, and I’ve just until the 3rd week of June to be ready to start our new school year!

If you have a child who will be starting 8th grade in your homeschool, feel free to share what you’ll be using.  It’s hard to believe that this is the last school year I will *EVER* have to plan!
